Viareggio Station â Versilia Shoreline, Northern Tyrrhenian Sea
Monitoring station installed at the clock tower ("Torre dell'Orologio"), at an elevation of 25 m a.s.l., on the Versilia shoreline facing the Northern Tyrrhenian Sea. Operational with LiDAR 2D sensor since September 2025. The monitored area is located north of the port of Viareggio.
The Versilia coast is one of Italy's most heavily frequented bathing destinations, attracting large numbers of swimmers throughout the summer season. The specific orientation of the shoreline relative to the dominant wave climate of the Northern Tyrrhenian â combined with the morphology of the nearshore â can generate rip currents and localised hazardous conditions for bathers, even under moderate wave conditions.
Continuous video and LiDAR monitoring allows the systematic detection of nearshore circulation patterns and morphological changes that influence bathing safety. The data acquired at this station directly feeds the bathing risk assessment and wave obliquity alert maps provided by the RVMC operational applications.
