Pineto Station – Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area, Adriatic Sea

Monitoring station installed at the Torre del Cerrano tower, at an elevation of 45 m a.s.l., on the Adriatic coast of Abruzzo (TE). Operational since May 2016. The monitored area falls within zone C of the Torre del Cerrano Marine Protected Area, one of the most ecologically significant stretches of the Adriatic coast, flanked to the north and south by heavily urbanised sectors protected by hard coastal defence structures.

The shoreline north of Pineto is subject to significant coastal erosion driven by the chronic sediment deficit that affects river mouths along the central Adriatic. The station, positioned downdrift of the sector protected by offshore breakwaters and groynes, measures storm impact from bora and sirocco events and continuously tracks shoreline evolution within the protected area, providing data to support the management of the MPA within a broader spatial planning framework.
